St. Barbe is located on the west coast near the tip of Great Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland. The community is in the Local Service District Pigeon Cove-St. Barbe [2]
St. Barbe is the terminus location of the ferry MV Apollo that runs from Blanc Sablon Quebec [3]. There are 2 to 3 departures daily and service is slightly increased during summer months [3]. With the completion of the Trans Labrador Highway in 2009 St. Barbe has seen a rise in importance as a transportation link [4]. The community also has a business sector to serve ferry travel, including the Dockside motel [5].
Services for the community include a K-12 school located in Plum Point about 25 km south, and healthcare in Port Sanders at the Rufus Guinchard Health Centre a (85 km south) or in Flowers Cove at the Strait of Belle Isle Clinic (20 km north). The community is home to the regional indoor arena [1]. The main service centre in the region is Flower’s Cove [6]. The main industry in the region is the fishery, with two fish plants in proximity one in Black Duck Cove [5 km south] and the other in Anchor Point (12 km North) [6].
